A part from a file in the Robotics Studio

Open a STEP / STL part without a production order, stand it on a table or fixture from a file, draw contours, holes and a drawing on it, give it a recipe and get the program.

When you need it

A first test of a cell, a one-off part or routing a sheet does not need a production order. A part you have as a file opens right in the Studio.

The steps above the scene

Under the tabs you see the way to a program: 1. Part › 2. Stands on › 3. Paths › 4. Recipe › 5. Saved › 6. Check and program. Done steps are ticked, the next one is highlighted with what to do. A click on a step takes you where it is done.

1. A part from a file

Left panel → group "Part" → "Open a part from a file".
  • STEP is read in millimetres.
  • STL has no unit: after opening, the system shows the file's size and what it becomes in mm for each choice (mm, cm, inch, m) and preselects the likely one.
  • The part is kept in the workspace and listed under "Parts from files" — in the Studio and on the "Seams & programs" tab.

2. A table or fixture from a file, and "Stands on"

Group "Cell and equipment" → kind (fixture, table, other) → "+ From a file". The model's bounding box becomes its collision envelope and its top the surface parts stand on.

Select the part → on the right "Stands on" → choose the table. The part puts itself down with its lowest point on the top (centred if it would hang off). Then move it across the surface with the arrows. The frame and the exact place are under "More".

3. Paths

Group "Paths and recipes":
  • "+ New contour from part edges" — click points, they snap to sharp edges;
  • "Find holes for drilling" — round holes of 1–50 mm that are in the model;
  • "+ Hole where I click" — click a face: the hole goes along its normal, through the part or as deep as given. The drill of its recipe makes the diameter;
  • "+ Drawing onto the part (DXF / SVG)" — outlines, a logo, text as curves onto the part's top: closed shapes become contours, open ones lines to engrave. The system asks the drawing's unit and where it goes (centred or at the part origin);
  • a CAM operation, or importing G-code / APT from your CAM — see the article on CAM operations.

4. Recipe and confirmation

Under the paths is a list: give each a recipe and press "Confirm". A program is made only from confirmed paths with an approved recipe. For a spindle there are "Ready recipes": HPL laminate — router Ø6 and drill Ø5, created and approved in one click.

5–6. Save, check, program

On the "Reach" tab, "Save the layout and check" saves your changes as a revision and starts the check. Then — the dry run program (moves only, no process) or the full program for FAIRINO, ABB or KUKA.

Limits

  • A file part's program is not staged on the cell through a production order — the program file is loaded by hand.
  • Equipment from a file is a box for collisions; a closer envelope is set in the Registry.
